Yesterday started out like any other with my sweet Briana crawling into bed with me just before 7 am to snuggle. I rolled over and noticed that she had blood on her face. I thought that she had picked her nose and made it bleed, (b/c she has done that a couple times before) but after wiping it, I soon realized that it was her head and not her nose that was bleeding. She had what we thought was another hemangioma growing on her forehead just above her eyebrow that had somehow burst. After trying to get the bleeding to stop for an hour, (I didn't realize that you should see a doctor if bleeding doesn't stop within 10 minutes) I called thinking my pediatrician could see her but they weren't open for another 45 minutes. So I called the urgent care, who crazy enough told me to call the pediatrician. So I called her Pediatrician. and explained everything. In the meantime I thought I got it to stop, but after Nani pulled off the Band-Aid I realized that it was in fact still bleeding, but had slowed and was picking up again. I called the Pediatrician, explained everything again, and they told me to bring her in right away. I made the 25 minute trip and they couldn't get it to stop either, so they sent us to the Children's Hospital in Denver, about an hour away.
So we (David came home early to go with me) get to the Children's Hospital, hit the ER and the doctor says she hasn't ever seen anything like this (the doctor was maybe my age...newbie!). We almost got some full blood work and a catheterization done on Briana accidentally (they mixed us up with another patient) but luckily the doctor caught that mistake before it was too late. So she then sent us upstairs to the Pediatric Dermatologists.
Those guys were GREAT!! They couldn't get it to stop bleeding with pressure, so they tried using a laser procedure to get it to stop. That didn't work, so they had to cauterize the thing, which we learned wasn't a hemangioma, it was a PYOGENIC GRANULOMA which is a capillary type of tumor, but is benign and easily taken care of.
After a long a torturous day Briana was just ready to get the heck out of there! The doctors gave her some juice, crackers, 2 suckers, and a cool Santa that plays music and talks.
Needless to say we all made it through the ordeal, and Briana got a toy and a cute hospital gown out of the deal.
We then celebrated by taking the kids to McD's.

I'm glad she was okay!
ReplyDeleteHoly cow, how scary. I'm glad she's okay. Love you, Nani!
ReplyDeletePoor girl! That's not exactly how you want to start your day. Glad everything is okay and everyone survived the ordeal.
ReplyDeleteWhat an ordeal! I'm glad it all worked out. Poor little thing!
ReplyDeleteWow. I'm glad she's okay! Doesn't inspire much faith in the medical staff at those hospitals though...
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, poor thing, and poor you too! Sounds like a little more 'excitement' than a person would want to deal with. I'm glad she's ok!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh!!!!!! She's such a trooper. : )
